Chocolate Layer Bars

Chocolate Layer Bars a crumbly sweet bar with a fudgy chocolate center. These bars are easy to make and the crust and the top are like a sweet shortbread texture and the center is a fudgy chocolate cream cheese mixture.

Ingredients

  • 12 ounces semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • 8 ounces cream cheese room temperature
  • 2/3 cup heavy cream
  • 1 teaspoon almond extract
  • 3 cups flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 1/2 cups sugar
  • 1 cup butter room temperature
  • 2 large eggs

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Grease a 9 by 13-inch pan.
  • Sift together the flour, baking powder, and salt and set aside.
  • In a medium saucepan combine the chocolate chips, cream cheese, and heavy cream. Over medium-low heat melt the chocolate and cream cheese until melted and combined.
  • Add the almond extract and mix in, set aside.
  • In a large bowl combine the sugar and butter beat with an electric mixer until well combined.
  • Add the eggs an mix them in. Add the flour mixture to the batter and mix until the mixture forms coarse crumbs.
  • Press half of the dough into the prepared pan. Spread the chocolate mixture over top of the crust.
  • Sprinkle the remaining dough over the top of the chocolate mixture.
  • Place the bars in the preheated oven and bake for 30 to 35 minutes or until the bars are golden brown over top.
  • Remover from the oven and cool on a cooling rack until completely cooled. Cut into bars.

Notes

  1. Heat the chocolate chips, cream cheese, and cream over medium-low heat. Stir constantly until the chocolate chips and cream cheese is melt and combined together.
  2. Don't worry if there are small pieces of the cream cheese that don't melt. They will melt and blend in during the baking process.
  3. Have the butter and cream cheese at room temperature so they blend well with the other ingredients.
  4. Store the bars in an airtight container on the countertop.
