Apple Scones

Apple scones are a fall treat made with your favorite apples. The scones are perfect for breakfast on the go or an afternoon treat. The cinnamon icing gives the scones a little sweetness and a little cinnamon flavor.

Ingredients

  • 2 1/4 cups flour
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 5 tablespoons butter
  • 1 large egg
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 2 tablespoons sour cream
  • 1 cup finely chopped apples

Icing

  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar
  • 2 tablespoons cream
  • 1/2 cup powdered sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon

Instructions

  • Preheat the oven to 400 degrees F. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or lightly grease it.
  • Combine the flour, baking powder, sugar, and salt in a large bowl. Add the 5 tablespoons of butter and cut in with a pastry cutter or a fork until the mixture is crumbly.
  • Mix together the egg, milk, and sour cream add to the dry ingredients along with the chopped apples, mix until just combined.
  • On a lightly floured surface knead the dough just enough to make a smooth dough (make sure not to over-knead).
  • Pat the dough into an 8-inch circle. With a sharp knife or a pizza cutter cut into 8 wedges.
  • Place each wedge on the prepared baking sheet about 1-inch apart.
  • Bake in the preheated oven for 11 to 14 minutes or until the scones are lightly browned.
  • Remove from the oven and place the scones on a cooling rack until the scones are completely cooled.
  • Once the scones are cooled make the icing.
  • Place the 2 tablespoons of butter, brown sugar, and cream in a small saucepan over medium heat bring to a boil. Continue to cook for 30 seconds stirring constantly.
  • Once it has boiled for 30 seconds add the powdered sugar and cinnamon to the mixture and mix until the icing is creamy and smooth.
  • Drizzle over the scones.

Notes

  1. Make sure to peel the apples before chopping them for the scones.
  2. Use fresh baking powder for the best results.
  3. Cool the scones completely before drizzling them with the icing.
  4. These scones freeze well. Freeze them in an airtight container.
