Black Bean Burgers

Black Bean Burgers are a delicious veggie burger that is made with black beans and a handful of other ingredients. These burgers are simple to make and you may be surprised how tasty they are.

Ingredients

  • 30 ounces black beans 2- 15 ounce cans
  • 1/2 medium green pepper
  • 1/2 medium onion
  • 2 cloves garlic
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 1/2 teaspoon cumin
  • 1/2 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • 1/2 teaspoon chili powder
  • 1/3 cup bread crumbs
  • 1 large egg
  • 2 shakes hot sauce optional
  • Olive oil

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.
  • Remove the beans from the cans into a colander and rinse with cold water until the water runs clear. Dry the beans with paper towels. Spread on a large baking pan.
  • Roast the beans for 5 to 7 minutes or until they start to split. Remove from the oven and set the pan on a cooling rack until the beans are cool.
  • Place the beans in a large bowl and mash the beans with a fork, leaving a few unmashed.
  • Add the remaining ingredients to the mashed beans and mix until well combined.
  • Divide the bean mixture and make it into six patties. Place the patties in the freezer for 30 minutes to set up.
  • Add olive oil to the skillet enough to cover the bottom of the skillet and heat over medium heat.
  • Place the patties in the pan (do not overcrowd). Cook until the patties are slightly crispy and the centers are heated through about 4 minutes on each side.
  • Serve on your favorite bun with your favorite toppings.

Notes

  1. Roast the beans for 5 to 7 minutes in an oven with the temperature set at 350-degree F. This will remove the water from the beans so the burger is not mushy.
  2. Use a fork to mash the beans leaving some beans unmashed.
  3. After making the patties place in the freezer for 30 minutes to set up. 
  4. Cook burgers for 4 minutes on each side, so that the burgers are lightly crispy on the outside and heated through.
