Ingredients

  • 2 3/4 cups flour
  • 1/2 cup butter
  • 1/3 cup sugar
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon cardamom
  • 1 tablespoon grated orange zest
  • 1 egg
  • 3/4 cup heavy cream
  • 1/2 cup orange sections chopped

Icing

  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon butter soften
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla
  • 2 to 3 tablespoons milk

Instructions

  • Preheat the oven to 375 degrees F. Line a large baking sheet with parchment paper.
  • In a large bowl combine the flour, baking powder, baking soda, sugar, cinnamon, cardamom, and salt, and mix until blended.
  • With a pastry cutter or fork cut in the butter until you have a crumbly mixture.
  • In another bowl combine the egg, milk, orange zest, and orange sections. Add this to your flour mixture.
  • By hand work the dough until it comes together. Form into an 8-inch circle and cut into 8 triangles using a pizza cutter or a sharp knife.
  • Bake in the preheated oven for 17 to 19 minutes or until lightly browned.
  • Remove from oven and cool on a cooling rack until cooled completely.
  • While the scones are cooling mix the icing together. In a small to medium bowl add all the ingredients, except the milk and blend together. Slowly add the milk beating until smooth and the right consistency for drizzling.

Notes

  1. As always with scones use butter that is cold, cut into small pieces before adding to the dry ingredients.
  2. The orange pieces should be cut into small pieces, about the size of a large blueberry.
  3. Bake the scones shortly before they will be served. They are best when they are fresh.
  4. If you like these scones do freeze nicely. Make sure the scones are cooled before freezing.
