Pizza tater tots are with tater tots that are baked in a skillet then top with Italian sausage, cheese sauce, green peppers, and green onions. I made this when our kids were visiting and they loved it. And I loved how easy it was to make.

Mike and I take a short road trip once or twice a year. Now that the kids are grown we enjoy getting away for a few days. Usually, we pick a direction we want to go but we don’t have a final destination. We always have a great time on these trips and have done some really fun things.

We took one of our road trips a few weeks ago. This time we had a destination in mind. Although the trip turned out to be different than what we expected we had a great time.

Mike and I both love history, so we ended up going to a museum, it was an old house that had been handed over to the city. The house at one point had been a library and when the library was moved to a new building it was turned into a lovely museum.

The woodwork was gorgeous in this museum and some of the bathrooms had tile that had been shipped from Italy. The woman that was working that afternoon was wonderful. She told us stories of the family that had built the house and stories about the history of the town. This was my favorite part of our trip.

Another thing that I really enjoyed was a bar/restaurant that Mike and I ate at. It was nothing really fancy, but they had all these tater tots cheesy appetizers. We had one that had pulled chicken and Monterey Jack cheese that was delicious.

This is where this post inspiration comes from today. I decided that a pizza flavor would go well with the tater tots and it would be easier and less time consuming than the pulled chicken one that we had at the restaurant.

So what I did was baked the tots in a skillet, they are not as crispy as fried ones, but I like tots baked. If you like to fry the tots there is no reason you can’t do that. I made a simple cheese sauce with white sauce and mozzarella cheese. I used Italian sausage with some pizza sauce. All of this was topped off with chopped green peppers and green onions. It is totally delicious.

Even if you don’t like tater tots, I bet you would love this recipe.

Ingredients

  • 50 tater tots
  • 1 pound Italian sausage
  • 1/2 cup pizza sauce
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 2 tablespoons flour
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 8 ounces mozzarella cheese shredded
  • 2 green onions
  • 1/4 cup green pepper chopped

Instructions

  • Place the tater tots in a 10-inch skillet. Make sure that there is one layer and that they fill the skillet. Bake according to the direction on the package.
  • Brown the Italian sausage and mix with a 1/2 cup of pizza sauce. Set aside.
  • When the tater tots are just about done baking make the cheese sauce.
  • In a skillet melt the butter. Once the butter is melted stir in the flour. Stir until the butter and flour are well combined and smooth. Cook for about a minute. Combine the milk and cream and pour slowly into the skillet with the flour and butter combination. Cook until the mixture starts to thicken. Add the mozzarella and stir until the cheese is melted. If the cheese sauce is too thick add a little milk to thin.
  • To assemble. Make sure the sausage is warm. Spread the sausage over the tater tots evenly. Pour the cheese sauce over the sausage and top with the green onions and green peppers.
  • Serve.

What a fun road trip! I’ve always loved history, so that sounds like my kind of road trip. Also, this sounds like my kind of appetizer/meal! Tater tots + cheese is amazing, so I can only imagine how good these were once you added in the pizza toppings, too. Yum!! 🙂
