Caramelized Onion & Mushroom Pizza is perfect when you want a meatless meal. Serve the pizza with a salad or fresh fruit for a complete meal.
Change up your pizza night with this caramelized onion and mushroom pizza. It is perfect if you are looking for a meatless meal or if you are looking for something different to serve during the Lenten season.
The pizza is made with simple homemade pizza dough, but if bread-making is not your thing you can buy pizza dough from the store. Combining the caramelized onions with the mushroom gives this pizza a wonderful flavor.
Helpful tips
- Read the directions completely before starting the recipe.
- If making the homemade pizza dough, make it first before anything is done. This will give it time to rise.
- Watch the onions closely when caramelizing so that they don’t burn, stirring them occasionally.
- If you prefer the onions and mushrooms can be put on the crust and the cheese can be added on top.
- The pizza is done went the crust of the pizza is golden brown.
- Store leftovers in the refrigerator for up to 3 to 4 days.
Ingredients needed
For the pizza dough
- Yeast
- Flour – all-purpose flour works great.
- Sugar – granulated sugar
- Salt
- Warm water – the water should be somewhere between 105 – 115 degrees F.
- Olive Oil
For the pizza toppings
- Olive Oil
- Onions
- Mushrooms
- Garlic
- Mozzarella Cheese
- Italian Seasoning
Steps for making caramelized onion and mushroom pizza
Step one
In a medium bowl combine 1 cup of the flour, yeast, sugar, and salt. Mix the ingredients until they are well combined. Add the water and olive oil.
Step two
Mix in the water and the olive oil. Add enough of the remaining flour to make a soft dough. Set aside.
Step three
In a skillet add 2 tablespoons of olive oil and the sliced onions. Cook for 5 to 7 minutes. Then add the mushrooms and garlic and continue to cook for another 13 to 15 minutes. Set aside.
Step four
Take half of the pizza dough and pat it out into a 7-inch circle on a greased baking sheet/pizza pan. Make a lip around the edge of the pizza. Do the same with the second half of the dough. Brush the center of each crust with olive oil and top with some of the mozzarella cheese.
Step five
Top the cheese with the caramelized onions and mushrooms. Sprinkle each with the remaining cheese. Then sprinkle with the Italian seasoning. Bake in a preheated oven of 425 degrees F until the crust is golden brown.

Caramelized Onion & Mushroom Pizza
Ingredients
Pizza Crust
- 2 to 2 1/4 cups flour
- 1 3/4 teaspoons yeast
- 2 1/4 teaspoons sugar
- 3/4 teaspoon salt
- 3/4 cup warm water
- 2 1/4 teaspoons olive oil
Pizza Toppings
- 1 medium onion Thinly sliced
- 8 ounces mushrooms Thinly sliced
- 1 tablespoon garlic minced
- 3 tablespoons olive oil
- 2 teaspoons olive oil for the top of the pizza crusts
- 2 cups mozzarella cheese
- 1 teaspoon Italian seasoning or to taste
Instructions
Pizza crust
- In a medium bowl mix one cup of flour, yeast, sugar, and salt mix together. Add the water and olive oil.
- Mix in enough of the remaining flour to make a soft dough. Set aside
Caramelized onions and mushrooms
- Add 2 tablespoons of olive oil to a large skillet or enough to coat the bottom of the skillet.
- Add the onions and saute until they start to soften about 5 to 7 minutes.
- Add the mushroom and garlic to the onions and continue to saute for another 13 to 15 minutes.
Making the pizza
- Preheat the oven to 425 F degrees. Grease a baking sheet/pizza pan.
- Divide the pizza dough in half. Make a 7-inch circle, adding a lip to the edge of the crust. Repeat with the other half.
- Brush pizza crust with olive oil
- Divide the mozzarella cheese and sprinkle the cheese over the olive oil, saving about one ounce to sprinkle over the onion and mushrooms
- Top the cheese with your caramelized onions and mushrooms
- Sprinkle the remaining cheese over top of the onion and mushrooms
- Sprinkle Italian seasoning over top of pizza
- Bake in the preheated oven for 13 to 15 minutes or until the crust is golden brown.
Notes

- If you are making homemade pizza dough, you will want to have the dough made before cooking the onions so that it has time to rest.
- Store-bought pizza dough will work for this recipe if you are short on time.
- The pizza can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for 3 to 4 days.
- It is best to reheat the pizza in the oven. Set the temperature to 350 degrees F and heat until the desired temperature. For a faster way to heat the pizza, use the microwave.
